Burlington Jobs Recognized by Kiplinger

A new recognition may encourage those seeking Burlington jobs.

Kiplinger has named Burlington eighth on its list of the 10 Best Cities for the Next Decade, noting that creativity and entrepreneurship define the city, which is a haven for writers, artists and white-collar workers alike. It also notes that the city is a role model for saving the planet.

“It’s always gratifying to have the efforts of residents, local businesses and organizations, and city government recognized nationally,” Mayor Bob Kiss said. “Burlington has distinguished itself with its focus on green economic development and encouragement of a diverse and creative economy. I appreciate Kiplinger’s prestigious designation of Burlington as a city of the present as well as the future.”

Hawaii Jobs Fueled by Construction

The construction industry is helping to create tens of thousands of Hawaii jobs.

Hawaii’s economy has continued to improve as of late, with the state’s unemployment rate decreasing to 6.6 percent during May and 592,800 workers holding down a job, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Part of the reason those numbers are so positive is the state’s booming construction industry.

At the end of May, Gov. Linda Lingle announced that Hawaii has begun more than $1.8 billion in capital improvement projects throughout the state, which is higher than a previous goal set by the administration.

Movie Industry Transforming Chicago Jobs

A new movie is helping to transform the local economy and create hundreds of Chicago jobs.

Mayor Richard M. Daley recently announced that Transformers 3 will film in Chicago from July 10 to August 19. The film – to be directed by Michael Bay and released in 2011 – will result in an economic impact of at least $20 million and create more than 200 jobs.

Among those employees will be 10 paid interns from Chicago Public Schools. A partnership between CPS and Free Spirit Media, a nonprofit, has already allowed these students to work on video and music production projects.

Boston Jobs with BHA

Local agencies are working to create more Boston jobs for youth this summer.

The Boston Housing Authority recently announced that it will hire 100 youths this summer as part of the Boston Youth Fund. This decision comes in advance of a potential move by the U.S. Senate that would provide $1 billion for summer jobs throughout the nation, resulting in $2 million for Boston and jobs for 1,200 local youths.

In order to be eligible for any of the available positions, youths must be between 15 and 17-years old, currently live in a BHA development, and apply for a position for the city’s summer jobs program by registering with the Hopeline.

Most Metros Lost Jobs Last 12 Months

Job lossThe majority of metropolitan areas across America lost workers and experienced increases in unemployment during the last year.

Of the 372 metropolitan areas the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics keeps records of, 291 had higher unemployment rates this April than last, while 73 had lower rates and eight were unchanged. Overall, 14 areas had an unemployment rate of at least 15 percent, while eight had rates below 5 percent.

During April, 128 metro areas had an unemployment rate of at least 10 percent, which is up from 91 areas during last year. At the same time, 67 areas had rates below 7 percent, which is a decrease from 113 during April 2009.

Vermont Work with Green Mountain Power

Those looking for Vermont work may soon have the chance to work with a company that is doing its part to provide renewable energy to the state.

Green Mountain Power recently announced its plans to build a new wind generating plant in Lowell, Vt., a move that will create jobs and provide economic benefits while at the same time increasing the state’s generation of renewable energy.

GMP transmits, distributes and sells electricity. The company is working with Vermont Electric and VELCO to come up with projects that provide customers stable-priced utilities and more available renewable energy alternatives.

Job in Vermont Drop

Even though the state’s unemployment rate continued to decrease, fewer people were able to find a job in Vermont during April.

That month, Vermont’s unemployment rate decreased to 6.4 percent after remaining at 6.6 percent for two months in a row. That recent decrease keeps the state’s rate below the national average of 9.9 percent.

Vermont had a total non-farm employment of 294,000 workers during April, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 295,900 workers during March and a 1.3 percent decrease from last year.
