Ways to Earn Extra Cash During Your Job Search
If you're in the midst of a job search, you're probably lacking both time and money, but luckily there are some quick ways to make cash while you continue to look for the perfect career.
It's more likely than not that your job search will end up becoming a full-time job itself. That being said, you're not going to get paid for the countless hours you spend e-mailing resumes and following-up on interviews, but there are jobs you can do on the side to pick up some extra cash.
Here are five part-time jobs that may help you through your job search - and even further your eventual career path - as compiled by PayScale:
- Restaurant and food service - Waiting tables is often considered a great way to earn extra money. That's mainly because the tips you'll earn can put you well over minimum wage. The median salary for a waiter or waitress is about $14.50 per hour including tips. Another bonus - waiting on tables is one of the most flexible part-time jobs out there, so you can work around any interviews you may get.
- Retail - This is a good alternative to food service jobs, although it generally pays a little less, with sales clerks and cashiers earning a median wage of $8.16 per hour. If you're interested in a retail position, check out warehouses, clubs and supercenters, all of which have good job prospects as their popularity continues to grow.
- Temp agency - There are a lot of temporary positions available right now, mainly because most employers are still cautious about hiring full-time workers amidst the unstable economy. Although salaries vary depending on the industry you're placed in and your experience level, keep in mind that temporary positions often turn into permanent ones, so it doesn't hurt to get placed in a position you can see yourself working long-term.
- Recreation - This type of work is great for those with knowledge of creative arts or sports. The industry offers plenty of part-time and seasonal work doing things like leading group outings or other activities. You also may work in a variety of settings, including community centers and summer camps, and will earn a median wage of $15.03 per hour.
- Test prep instructors and tutors - The number of part-time positions available during evenings and weekends in this industry is continuing to grow. Work typically includes helping older students succeed on important tests or helping students of all ages with homework. Test prep instructors willing to teach GMAT prep courses can earn about $100 per hour and tutors generally earn about $13.40 per hour.
