Retail grocery jobsMany retail grocery jobs [1] are being supported by an overall increase in sales at the nation's largest stores.

According to an article from Supermarket News [2], a recent report found that overall sales at the nation's 10 largest supermarkets increased by 1.85 percent between the second half of 2009 and the second half of 2010.

Increasing inflation [3] and a slowly improving economy are the main reasons for that growth. Most experts predict that larger stores will continue to see sales grow throughout this year as competition causes companies to lower their prices and consumers become more confident.

Although overall sales increased, half of the 10 largest supermarkets saw sales grow, while the other half saw sales take a hit.

The Kroger Company, which supports many Denver Colorado jobs (http://denver.jobing.com [4]), brought in the most sales at $38.6 billion. The company also saw the third-largest increase in sales, at 6.6 percent, behind only Whole Foods and Harris Teeter.

Supermarkets that saw sales increase during the last half of 2010 include: Whole Foods by 14.2 percent, Harris Teeter by 9.3 percent, Kroger by 6.6 percent, Ahold USA by 1.2 percent, and Safeway by .2 percent.

Stores that saw sales decrease during the last half of last year include: Supervalu by 8.7 percent, A&P by 7.8 percent, Stater Bros by 4 percent, Winn-Dixie by .9 percent, and Delhaize America by .4 percent.

The 10 largest supermarket chains with public equity or debt, based on sales for the last six months of 2010, include:

  1. The Kroger Company - $38.6 billion
  2. Safeway - $22.2 billion
  3. Supervalu - $13.3 billion
  4. Ahold USA - $10.9 billion
  5. Delhaize America - $9.5 billion
  6. Whole Foods - $5.1 billion
  7. A&P - $3.7 billion
  8. Winn-Dixie - $3.6 billion
  9. Harris Teeter - $2.1 billion
  10. Stater Bros. - $1.8 billion
