Soon-to-be displaced Dell workers will have the opportunity to receive extra outplacement help from local and state government agencies. Go to http://outplacing.com to learn more about outplacement services.

Dell recently announced its plan to close the company's plant in Winston-Salem, N.C., which opened only four years ago. The move, which is expected to take place early next year as part of a corporate cost-cutting strategy, will result in the elimination of 905 jobs. However, about 600 workers will be laid off during November.

After hearing of the company's plans, representatives from local and state government agencies decided to begin coordinating help for Dell workers who will soon lose their jobs. Even though Dell has offered to provide severance packages and job placement services, local and state officials often provide extra help when major layoffs occur.

According to an article by Trading Markets, North Carolina's workforce development specialists will coordinate with the outplacement firm contracted by Dell to help workers who lose their jobs. The effort as a whole will include the The Employment Security Commission of North Carolina and Dell managers and employees.

Despite the upcoming cutbacks at Dell, the Winston-Salem area has seen its local economy begin to improve. During August, the area saw its unemployment rate decrease from 10.2 percent to 10 percent, which was only slightly higher than the national unemployment rate at the time of 9.7 percent.

The area had a total non-farm employment of 210,700 workers during August, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 207,800 workers during July, but a 2.7 percent decrease from last year.
