Vermont Work with Green Mountain Power

Email This Post Print This Post

Those looking for Vermont work may soon have the chance to work with a company that is doing its part to provide renewable energy to the state.

Green Mountain Power recently announced its plans to build a new wind generating plant in Lowell, Vt., a move that will create jobs and provide economic benefits while at the same time increasing the state’s generation of renewable energy.

GMP transmits, distributes and sells electricity. The company is working with Vermont Electric and VELCO to come up with projects that provide customers stable-priced utilities and more available renewable energy alternatives.

“This is an important step in our mission to provide our customers with cost-effective, low carbon power,” Mary Powell, president and CEO of GMP, said. “We have found that investing in and building utility scale renewable energy projects is a solid way to provide our customers with low cost and low carbon electricity.”

The new plant, which is expected to cost about $150 million, will be GMP’s second renewable energy plant in Vermont. The company is now waiting on state regulators to approve the plan, which also includes upgrades to the existing power transmission infrastructure and substations.

The proposed project will include up to 21 turbines along 3.2 miles on Lowell Mountain. Once complete, the plant will produce up to 63 megawatts of renewable energy, which could provide electricity for 20,000 homes, or 6 percent to 8 percent of GMP’s power generation needs and 4 percent of Vermont Electric’s power generation needs.
